So you're happily writing those long awaited blog posts and articles for your website when all of sudden your screen popups with a message stating that you have a problem. A problem in the arena of having a virus but really the only problem is the popup box that's staring you in the face and now you're wondering what to do about it?
Do you know what to do in this case? Well this article is going to ask some questions and give you answers to make sure that you do know what you should do in order to protect your computer and the information that's on the computer.
So if a popup happens on your computer what do you do? 1) ignore it 2) act on it 3) clear your screen and pretend it never happened
#2 is the right answer. I know it seems elementary but a lot of people end up with answers 1 and 3 believe it or not. Things happen for a reason on your computer and you need to be vigilant and proactive in protecting your computers resources to make sure that you'll be able to work on it tomorrow.

This is a bit of a trick question because the answer is really 3. Maybe. Maybe yes in the sense that if you ignore the message then exploitation of your computer may happen if you don't identify what the real problem is. Maybe no if you in fact take care of the situation by shutting down all applications, downloading the latest updates from your antivirus software and scanning your whole system to make sure that you don't have malicious scripts on your system.
Is your antivirus software at fault for receiving this message? 1) yes 2) no 3) you are
Figure it out? The answer is 3. You are. Hard to believe but just because #3 is the answer doesn't mean that you intended for this to happen. These type popup messages happen because of open ports on your system have been identified by bots programs on the internet. They are constantly searching for open ports and if by design either by your software or the way your operating system is configured a port is open then you are open to exploitation.
Knowing what ports are open and closed can be found out by programs that look for this issues. Know what you have and close the loopholes in your system.

Anyone who uses a computer with an Internet connection has to be very cautious when downloading programs from the internet and email due to the threat of viruses and worms. These harmful program codes and programs can cause your computer to become unstable and it can also infect other systems which are connected to yours.
This is why any sensible computer user has got to have anti virus programs installed on their computer for protection against attacks from viruses which proliferate the Internet. The good thing about viruses and worms is that it is easier to spot them trying to get into your system. For instance, they can try and enter your system through a suspicious attachment usually from an unknown source. By now must Internet users know not to open any suspicious attachments. Also good anti-virus programs can scan attachments before you can open them so that your risk against viruses are managed properly.
However, as an internet user, there is more to worry about than viruses and worms. Unfortunately, anti virus programs are not designed to detect other types of threats and if you are not careful, you may unknowingly install adware and spyware into your system. Once this happens, getting rid of these programs can be very difficult. For one thing, most spyware can go undetected in your system. You will continue to use your computer and Internet without even realizing that your privacy is immensely violated and your security is at risk.
Since spyware can go undetected and you can continue to use your computer and the Internet as usual, we have a tendency to believe we do not have to worry about uninstalling spyware. But that is further from the truth.
Spyware can infringe mildly on our privacy because it can track and take notes of your usage patterns and this information is then reported back to the company which created the spyware so that they can build marketing profiles. More than that though, some spyware actually have the ability to register and take note of key strokes, scan documents within your computer's hard drive, and can steel your passwords and other sensitive information that can make you the victim of identity theft and other situations where your person information could be used to compromise your security.
However, Adware is also used by companies to infect your computer with unsolicited ads. The most harmful kinds are the ones that indiscriminately pop ads on to your screen even if you are not viewing their site or even using the parent program that launched the adware. In some cases adware continues to work within your system long after you have uninstalled the program it came bundled with.
Given the security risks, the invasion of your privacy, and the annoying effects of spyware and adware to your computer, you will be wise to uninstall these programs from your computer. However, to uninstall adware and spyware from your computer is not a simple task.
For one thing, companies that proliferate the Internet with spyware and adware go to great lengths to ensure that uninstalling them from your system is difficult. For instance, a lot of times, you will be unable to use legitimate software if you attempt to unistall the adware or spyware it comes bundled with. Adware and spyware are usually bundled with legitimate freeware or shareware and cannot be run independently of each other.

The Internet as we all know is a marvelous tool. It is truly amazing, we can buy just about anything, research anything and communicate across the world. The Internet is so popular that just about everyone around the world has access to an Internet connection.
Unfortunately, there are always those unscrupulous groups who take advantage of a good thing. You have groups who have come up with free spyware and adware programs to take advantage of the connectivity of the Internet. Spyware is also known as computer software that comes bundled with some programs which are downloadable from the Internet and it watches what you do on your computer. To some, it may seem that the idea of spying on some one's computer is not possible, but unfortunately spyware is real and is out there.
The whole purpose of spyware is to secretly track your personal information. Spyware uses techniques like tracking Internet browsing patterns, logging keystrokes, and some spyware can scan documents from your computer's hard drive. Spyware is used on the Internet to enable unsolicited pop ups and is also used to be able to commit criminal acts such as identity fraud by stealing passwords or vital credit information.
Spyware is a very difficult and dangerous program. It runs undetected within your system tracking your activities without your knowledge. It also causes a slow down in your computer's performance.
Free spyware and adware programs often come bundled along with freeware and downloads which you install on to your computer. There are also some unsolicited pop-ups that you may come across while browsing that appear to be regular windows system generated pop-ups and clicking on these will cause you to unknowingly install unwanted spyware.
Just being on the Internet and browsing makes you susceptible to spyware. There are some precautions you can take to ensure safer web usage. For example, you should install legitimate anti-spyware programs to detect, get rid of, and prevent future installations of spyware onto your system. Do not be too trusting of the anti-spyware downloads, as some of them are trying to trick you into installing free spyware and adware programs without your knowledge.
You should always be very careful when you download any free programs from the Internet. Some free versions of programs contain spyware so make sure you read the agreements section before agreeing to download anything.

Have you recently gone out and purchased a state of the art PC, with all the bells and whistles hoping to get the very best performance for your money? Are you now starting to notice that your computer isn't performing as well as it originally did? Are you looking for answers as to why your top of the line computer isn't working any better then the old machine you gave to your friends? If any of these questions ring a bell then this article is for you.
I am a certified computer technician, that is trying to educate as many people as possible as to why their expensive, or not so expensive computer never seem to run as well over time as they did the day they bought them. In this article I will be covering the following the subjects:
Signs of a computer slow down
Common causes of a computer slow down
Easy solutions to a computer slow down
How to avoid a computer slow down
1. Signs of a computer slow down
You may be thinking, the obvious sign to my computer slowing down, is I start to notice it slowing down. If you are thinking this, then you are obviously correct, however that does not mean that you cannot detect a computer problem earlier.
The first sign of a computer slow down, is you start noticing many programs loading in your task bar. Your task bar is located at the bottom right portion of your screen, and as the computer is initially loading you will see items pop up in that tray. When your computer comes configured from the manufacturer it may or may not have alot of applications running, but in most cases it does not. As time goes by and people download things like MSN Messenger, Limewire, Yahoo Messenger, AOL Messenger, ICQ ... they all start to accumulate. Eventually there are so many programs running that it takes a very long time for your computer to load.
Another possible sign of your computer slowing down, is you start to notice weird looking banner ads and pop ups while browsing the internet, or maybe even when your computer is just sitting idol. This is sorta a worst scenario then above, as this usually points towards a virus issue rather then just a maintenance issue. Keep an eye out for this symptom because this is where things can go from bad to worse in a heart beat.
There exists many other common symptoms, however for the purpose of this article, I feel that if you can get a handle on these early signs and how to resolve them, then you will be much better equipped moving forward.
2. Common causes of a computer slow down
In 80% to 90% of my clients that come to me and their problem description is "My computer is very slow", there are usually two causes.
Cause 1 - to many programs installed and running
The first problem I see, is people do not keep their computer organized. This problem often occurs in houses with many family members using the computer, each person has their separate accounts, and each one downloads and installs programs at will. One thing to know right away is, for the most part every program you download and install comes by default with a "Run on startup" option enabled, meaning as soon as your computer loads all the programs that were downloaded and installed with this option checked must load on startup. This is a very common cause to a computer slow down, and can easily be fixed. If you take a look at your taskbar (bottom right of your screen) and notice that there are many applications running, some of which you do not recognize, then we suggest reading our article on running MSCONFIG utilty to disable unwanted applications. (Refer to Apendix A at the bottom of this article for a link).
Cause 2 - Potential Virus or Spyware problem
As mentioned in the previous section, this is unfortunetly the much worse of the two causes. You can easily tell if you have been infected by some sort of virus, spyware or adware if you notice that while you are online or even when the computer is sitting idol, that there are banner ads and pop ups on your screen. Typically in this case, what happens is while you were browsing the internet, you accidentally (or on purpose) clicked a link to a site that contained malacious data. Often times when you visit legit sites, you may see a banner add saying "punch the monkey and win" or something to that effect. Word of advice DO NOT PUNCH THE MONKEY. Also, if you are reading this and thinking you might have this problem, and are wondering why your anti-virus program did not find this, it could either be that the virus is new and your software is not up to date, or perhaps if you accept the download and ignore warnings from your anti-virus then its your fault.
3. Easy Solution to a computer slow down
As mentioned in a previous section, the solution to cause number 1 can be handled by using MSCONFIG to disable installed programs so they do not run everytime windows starts. In addition to this, you can choose to perhaps uninstall programs that you do not need. For example, I have seen on some computers people are running, Limewire, Napster, Bearshare, etc... First things first, I hope you are using those to share pictures with your friends, and not download pirated music. Second, do you really need all those programs running at once? My suggestion would be to go to your control pannel and uninstall the programs you don't need. If you are unsure how to uninstall programs from your computer, then read our Uninstalling unecessary programs article. For a link to this article please refer to Appendix A at the bottom of this article.
In regards to the second cause for a slow down, this is where you have a decision to make. There are chances that this problem does not get worse, depending on what type of virus you have been infected with, however in my experience it will get worse. The easiest way to try and remove this problem is to run your Anti-Virus scan and see if it is able to detect the problem and remove it. In the event that you cannot resolve the issue, I would suggest referring to a computer technician and have the threat removed safely and cleanly before causing other issues. I am aware that if you have been reading this article and this was the problem you were experiencing that you are a little frustrated at this point. If this is case I apologize.
4. How to Avoid a computer slow down
Avoiding the problems described above is quite simple actually. The first and most obvious solution to avoiding your computer slowing down, is pay attention to what sites you are visiting, what programs you are downloading and what you accept to install on your computer. Often times, companies will play tricks on you when installing downloaded applications. A common example of this is when you go to download "Adobe Flash" there is a small section on the install page asking you if you also want to install google toolbar, and by default it is selected. For those people who just click click install on a regular basis, this is a perfect example of how extra applications get on your computer without you knowing.

As subsets of specialized podcasts become more popular, you may hear or come across these and maybe more.
Autocasting (automatic generation of podcasts from text)
Godcasting (religious podcasts)
Javacast (podcasting to mobile phones using J2ME Midlets)
Learncasting (delivering instructional content by RSS)
Media RSS (media file syndication used by Yahoo!)
Mobilecasting (podcasting to mobile phones)
Palmcasting (podcasting to Palm OS based devices)
Punchcasting (punching podcasts directly into smartphones.)
Skypecasting (recording Skype text, voice, or video conversations)
Sound-seeing tours (podcast of the museum tour variety)
Vodcasting or Vidcasting (podcasts using video)
Podcatching and Listening to Podcasts OK, so where do I find some cool podcasts to listen to? Podcasts are generally 'resident' as URLs; 'uniform resource locators', which means effectively they simply live on (or arguably are) Web pages.
But there is nothing to obviously distinguish a Webpage that is (or contains) a podcast from one that doesn't, any more than a URL will tell whether a page is a store, a photo gallery, or only text. Since podcasts are not yet .everywhere, you may wonder how to get started listening to them, where to find them, what hardware and software you might need (or want) and so forth.
The short answer is that to listen you don't need any special software other than a program capable of playing mp3 formats such as Windows Media Player on your computer. You do need special software to find, download and organize your subscription feeds.
A whole class of podcast-oriented software has been developed, and if you are not planning to use an iPod and limit yourself to the one-click options available for synchronized download from iTunes itself, you may want to look into this.
The category of software is sometimes called a 'podcatcher' but increasingly the more generic receiver is in use and often the software is called a retriever, it does just what it sounds like!
'Retriever' software As subsets of specialized podcasts become more popular, you may hear or come across these and maybe more.
This software is designed to allow the podcast 'feed' to be directly downloaded, usually automatically with parameters you set, to your PC or other listening device.
All of these software types are basically aggregators, which is the opposite of 'syndication'. Syndication is the distribution of material to various channels. Aggregation is the retrieval of material from various channels.
Many podcasts require subscriptions (some charge, some don't) in order to be able to download and listen to any single entry or episode. If so, the retriever / receiver software can be set up to accept all of your subscriptions, which in most cases is as easy as dragging and dropping in a list and then you can choose among the titles and episodes as you would choose among songs on a CD or mp3 player.
If particular podcasts dont require subscriptions, and you're interested in finding certain content or episodes, some retriever/receiver software can be set to actually search the Internet for the material you want, and either download it or ask if you want it. All in all, it's a pretty cool way to get and manage this programming.

How to Back Up Your Computer - The Easy Way by Dan Kornak

In this day and age, we use computers every day and with that comes the issue of backing up your files. It is important to backup files from time to time because if anything were to happen to your hard disk, you could potentially loose ALL your information.
People generally do not back up their files because of a certain intimidation that still exists. Files are scattered all over your desktop and throughout your computer. It gets overwhelming to find all these files therefore people do not do anything at all.
One easy technique that I use on my clients when backing up their computers is to organize every file on the computer that needs to be backed up. Usually, these files are located on the desktop and in "My Documents". I create a few folders on the desktop and limit each folder to the size of a disk whether it be a CD or DVD depending on how I am backing up my files. With this method, each folder on the desktop is equal to one backup disk. This way, the files are a little easier to manage.
I move all the files from "My Documents" and put them in the folders that I created. After the files are in the respective folders on the desktop, I open up "My Computer" and open the disk drive that will write the disks. This is assuming of course that you have a CD or DVD burner and you are using Windows XP.
The CD or DVD drive window will look like this.
Click on the "Write Files to Disk" and follow the on screen wizard.
Once you are finished backing up all your files, move them back to "My Computer" or remove them if you need the space.

After testing of the next prototype in October the product should be manufactured ready for launch and we will have the single units we all need for any hard drive of a specified form factor. Development was slowed during research due to the inner assembly of each manufacturer hard drives having different castings; the new tool has to work around all of these.

Lately I've been feeling like I spend way too much time grinding for gold in World of Warcraft so I decided that I needed to do something about it. I have long figured that the auction house is frequently where the real gold making happens, but it just seems like half the time I don't even know what I am doing. Well, now that I have watched Wayne's video of how he does things in the auction house, I feel like I have a lot more understanding of how it all works so I can make more money.
So are there any cons to Warcraft Wealth? Not too many, I don't think. You still have to do some work to get gold. It doesn't just fall into your lap. And I still find myself doing some really boring grinding sometimes, but not as much and now I can use Wayne's mining maps if I want to make the most out of my time doing that. The only other con is that with the auction house stuff, sometimes you have to have a little patience. It doesn't always go exactly as Wayne shows you in his video, but if you wait long enough then the prices will move in the direction you need them to go. Just sometimes you don't want to wait or you don't have the time to wait. But other than those two things, Warcraft Wealth has really made a difference for me in how fast I can get gold when I'm playing WoW and when it comes down to it, I'm going to be pretty happy riding my Epic Flying Mount!

Painting the town red, blue, or any other color is a lot of fun in this charming Wii platformer.
The GoodPainting Chroma City is a fresh, satisfying experience Story is told in a series of very smart, funny movies Multiplayer modes are fun Graphics and sound work together to make the most of the game's great concept. The BadToo few challenge types that repeat too often. Children often find joy in taking crayon to paper and turning the blank page into a vibrantly colorful mess. The act of bringing color to what was colorless is delightful and tangibly rewarding, yet as we grow older, this activity tends to lose its charm. De Blob, a great new platformer for the Wii, takes this act and makes it rewarding again in a way that can be enjoyed by players of all ages. The story of de Blob is told through a series of excellent movies that manage to be funny and smart without a word of dialogue. The evil INKT Corporation, led by the dictatorial Comrade Black, has drained all the color from Chroma City, turning it into a drab, monochromatic metropolis. It has also turned its once diverse and colorful citizens, the Raydians, into sullen, homogenous Graydians. Blob joins forces with a resistance movement called the Color Underground to bring color back to Chroma City and liberate its people. In its own lighthearted, rated-E-for-everyone way, the game deals with the theme of political oppression, and the whole game can be viewed as one big visual metaphor about the role of art in a free society. But the game never bludgeons you with this stuff, so you can also just take it at face value as an entertaining little tale and leave it at that. In any case, the mischievous, versatile Blob is a terrific hero who oozes personality (among other things), and you'll quickly grow attached to him, as well as his fellow Color Underground members.
The basic goal of each level is to paint part of Chroma City and, by doing so, gradually free the city from the colorless grip of the INKT Corporation. As you paint the area, the color energy level (or, if you want to be old-fashioned about it, your score) increases, and you'll need to reach a certain total in each section before you can open the gate to the next. There's always a clock ticking down in Story mode, but this is not a high-pressure game. You generally have plenty of time to leisurely make your way through each section at your own pace, which is a good thing. It keeps the focus on the game's most enjoyable aspect: painting the town.
Blob starts each level without any color himself, but thankfully, Chroma City is crawling with paintbots, which are spiderlike robots with tanks of red, yellow, or blue paint on their backs. By smashing into one of these, Blob becomes coated with paint. Each paintbot you smash nets you 10 paint points up to a maximum of 100, which work both as his health and as his attack strength, as certain foes require a certain number of paint points to defeat. (Blob also gets bigger as he absorbs more paint.) Blob paints in broad strokes; simply making contact with a building while you're wearing a coat of paint is enough to cover every inch of the building's surface in that color, so you'll quickly turn drab, gray parts of town into vibrant neighborhoods again. Zooming around restoring color to the city is a lot of fun, at least partially because the visual results of your actions are so dramatic and so enjoyable to behold. Wiping out the monotony of INKT's rule is so satisfying that you'll naturally find yourself wanting to cover as much of the city in color as you can--not just the easily accessible areas, but every INKT propaganda billboard overlooking the city and every blimp soaring overhead--leaving no sign of INKT's oppression.
Throughout each section of the city are challenges that give you specific goals to fulfill, lending some structure to an otherwise unstructured experience. There are four types of challenges. Races require you to hit a series of checkpoints in a limited amount of time. Combat challenges involve taking out specific INKT soldiers or equipment. In landmark challenges, you must hit the weak points of specific structures that INKT has commandeered with large quantities of a given color of paint. Some of these structures are protected by traps, including spikes and electrified panels, which makes reaching the weak points a bit tricky. Restoring these landmarks to their former glory is often a rewarding surprise in and of itself. It's a treat, for instance, to do away with the soulless Church of INKTology, only to find that the building is truly a shrine to skateboarding, with Raydians happily riding the ramps on the rooftop. Not all challenges are created equal, however, and one in particular really loses steam fast. In it, you are assigned to paint specific structures in specific colors. You might need to paint one cluster of buildings green, another orange, and another purple, for instance, all in a relatively short amount of time. As much fun as it is to paint the town, being told exactly what to paint and what color to paint it can feel a bit limiting.
You move Blob around with the thumbstick on the Nunchuk and swing the remote down to jump. Blob gets around by rolling, and maneuvering him around Chroma City is a breeze. In addition to these standard moves, he's also capable of running along walls and jumping off of them. These more advanced skills are a bit trickier to pull off, but once you get the timing down, you'll be bopping your way all over the place, though Blob has a frustrating tendency to get wedged into tight spaces, particularly when he's absorbed a lot of paint. Combat is also simple but fun. You target your enemies with the Z button and then jump on them to smash them. Blob hits his targets with unerring accuracy, and targeting distant paintbots or INKT troops is often a necessary technique for leaping across greater distances that Blob might not otherwise be able to accomplish. If Blob is hit with the nasty ink of INKT, his paint points will quickly plummet, and he'll need to find a source of water to wash himself off right away. Although most enemies aren't much of a threat, they can certainly be a nuisance. The most interesting type of INKT soldier is the Elite Inky. Decked out in a colored uniform, these soldiers can only be squashed by Blob when his color matches that of the soldiers. For the most part, de Blob is quite an easy game, though the game's one and only boss fight at the end--while not extraordinarily difficult--is surprisingly tough in comparison to everything that precedes it.
The single-player mode is definitely where the meat of the game lies, but the gameplay translates very well to multiplayer action as well. The game has three multiplayer game modes, each accommodating up to four players. In each one, your goal is to paint more of the level than your opponents. In the Paint Match mode, you can paint over other players' colors, whereas in Blob Race, each building can only be painted once. Finally, in Blob on the Run, only one player can paint at any one time while other players find and smash that blob to acquire the ability to paint. The more people you have on hand for these modes, the better. The areas feel a bit large for two players, but with four players, the action can really get frantic as players zoom around the city, vying for the top spot.
The game's presentation is outstanding. While it's not technically impressive, the artistic design of the visuals is delightful and a large part of what makes de Blob such a joy to play. Watching the city gradually go from oppressive gray monotony to vibrant colorful freedom is rewarding. All of the characters, even Comrade Black and his INKT goons, also have an infectious charm. The sound is terrific as well, with the characters speaking a cute and funny gibberish language. The funky music selections, which you choose from before each level, provide dynamic accompaniment to the action, exploding with sound each time you paint something and building up gradually as color is restored to more of the area.
There's a good deal of content in de Blob. While you have a lot of freedom in terms of how much or how little time you spend completing each of the game's 10 story levels, you'll probably spend roughly an hour or so on each one. Because the game tracks your progress in every area, you may want to go back to complete more challenges, paint more billboards, or do any number of things you may have missed the first time through. In addition, there's a Free Paint mode if you find yourself wanting to color the town without any pesky time limits or INKT forces to bother you. There are also a good number of one-off secret missions that you unlock as you progress, which you can complete to unlock concept artwork, movies of the game's development, and the like. The small number of challenge types means that the action gets a bit repetitive after a while, but de Blob is still an invigorating explosion of color that anyone with an interest in platformers should absolutely check out
